In 2019, the City of Brownsville and leaders from across the Rio Grande Valley signed an agreement to merge the Brownsville, Harlingen-San Benito, and Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organizations converting the Rio Grande Valley MPO into the 5th largest in Texas.
Brownsville South Padre Island Airport
The Brownsville South Padre Island Airport celebrated a milestone with a “Topping Off” ceremony as the final steel beam was placed atop the 97,000 square foot new passenger terminal building. This $50 Million Investment (Federal Aviation Administration) is on schedule and is scheduled for completion in the 4th quarter of 2020.
With over 150 workers on-site, progress at the new terminal building continues!
As of January 30, 2020 the dry-in of the building advanced as the exterior curtain wall, and sections of glass were installed. The placement of brick detail at the southwest corner of the building has begun. Simultaneously, HVAC duct & interior framing work continues, while paving of the access road and airport loop has begun.
We are excited to announce despite ongoing construction projects, the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport grew a total of 17.59% in 2019, that’s over 19,000 new passengers, when compared to 2018’s passenger traffic.
